Gaming Acronyms You should Know
RPG stands for the role-playing game. Games in which you build a character within a world by completing missions, leveling up, and learning new skills. Skyrim, Divinity: Original Sin 2, and TheOuterWorlds are a few examples.
RTS stands for real-time strategy. The most popular real-time strategy PC games have you fighting battles in real-time, commanding units from an aerial view, and occasionally building bases. As an example, consider the game StarCraft II: Supreme Commander.
TBS stands for turn-based strategy. Strategic games in which you command troops or heroes in combat with your opponent by taking turns. TBS games are typically played on a grid. Examples include FireEmblem and AdvanceWars.
FPS stands for the first-person shooter. The core of these games, when played in first person, is running and shooting people or things. Call of Duty, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Halo are a few examples.

BR stands for BattleRoyale. A relatively new game genre in which multiple combatants compete to be the last player or team standing in a constrained and shrinking environment. Examples include Fortnite and ApexLegends.
MOBA stands for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. The full name is seldom used. MOBAs feature two teams of player-controlled hero characters battling to guide waves of NPC Creeps down lanes to destroy enemy defenses, buildings, and, eventually, the game-winning central building. DOTA2 and League of Legends are two examples.
MMO stands for Massive Multiplayer Online. MMOs allow a large number of players to share the same virtual global space. The most common are MMORPGs, which allow players to traverse large areas of the world filled with other players by completing missions to level up, or by heading into sandboxes with a team to complete raids and dungeons. World of Warcraft, Black Desert Online, and Eve Online are a few examples.
Trading / Trading Card Game (TCG / CCG) Card-based battle games in which players summon creatures and cast spells by spending mana. Hearthstone and Magic: The Gathering Arena are two examples.
DLC stands for downloadable content. Purchasable and downloadable add-on content for a game.
P2W: Pay to Win – A derogatory term for games in which players can pay real money to purchase items that give them an advantage over their opponents.
GLHF Chat Terms: Good luck Have fun. Typically said at the start of an online match with the opposing team, to get the game started in a good mood.
GG / GGWP: a well-played game Often used at the end of a game. GG is also used in games such as DOTA2 and StarCraft to indicate when one side concedes defeat.
Away from the keyboard (AFK) This indicates that the player has left the game, usually leaving their character alone. AFK is used whether or not a keyboard is used to control the game and is not limited to PC.
